“How can I be confident in that meeting, on that phone call, or negotiating what I need to advance in my career or business? “
It’s the number one question I’m asked in any talk, event or training seminar I’ve led. Women stand up and openly share that they feel confident in other areas of their career, they know their expert value, but for some reason they feel weak and struggle with asserting themselves once they have that sit down, in key conversations. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. I get it and have been there.
.
In truth, I know sometimes you may feel it is a confidence thing but what I have found personally and in everyone I’ve coached for over a decade now, is not really a lack of confidence, so much as a lack of clarity around how you want to show up in that work situation. Here’s what you can do right now. First, know the Confidence Formula.
.
The Confidence Formula is 1 part GRACE (your quiet power which speaks VOLUMES), 1 part GUTS and 1 part BULLDOG.
.
Read on for practical how-to advice to implement this simple formula…
.
The Gutsy Leadership approach I’ve taken advancing as a former IT executive and then again when I exited to lead a training and coaching practice is a 2-step process, which WORKS.
.
Step 1 – Decide on who you want to BE in that room and how you want to show up. Answering the question: How do I want to be perceived?
.
Step 2 -DO Take action (led from sudden impulses of thought, otherwise known as your Gut Instinct) and speak up (the big part of the DO-ing) where you show up with high intention and low expectation. In this step, you will find your voice and speak without apology. Don’t worry, your intuition will guide you on the words to say once you lock in the answer to that key question above.
.
You see, it’s the Being before the Doing. In that order: Step 1 and then Step 2.
.
Now you may be thinking “But Marisa, how do I know for sure what I say will come out perfectly and I don’t screw it up?” To which I answer, because your spirit will always support you. It will have your back once you stay focused and with bulldog determination know who you want to be. Yes as the graceful quiet and confident professionals we are, we must go in there with a bulldog powerful determination (assertively not aggressively, because we’re not really bulldogs, we just want to bring that kind of energy they can’t refuse) which people can feel. That’s how it works. The best part – you can apply this everywhere in your life – your health, buying a home, negotiating that car deal, in your personal relationships, with your children. It’s everywhere.
