If you have just landed here at In Our Shoes, you’ll find I talk a lot about the tactical tools smart driven women like yourself need in their hip pockets in order to advance in their careers. Today however, rather than hitting the road running, fueled for your journey, I’d like to pull it back to first gear, where you’re just getting your engine started.

.

On my last trip to London earlier this month and at a recent event In Our Shoes held here in Manhattan, I heard from many women who shared that they knew what they no longer wanted in their careers. Unanimously they wanted out of their day jobs. However some of them were unsure of what they actually did want or just didn’t know how to get started. Therefore, today I am sharing five proven ways to get you revved up and inspired to take tiny footprints towards a career you L – O – V – E.

Enjoy and with love,

1 – Move the wall.

There are lots of stories you have made up which weave a tall tale about the obstacles standing in your way. It’s the female manager that you just can’t get past in order to advance in your firm. It’s the abrasive men that you work with that seem to always sabotage your career. I’m not here to tell you you’re crazy; these are legitimate setbacks. However, don’t let these barriers define you, let them fuel you which leads me to the next footprint.

2. Have Emotional Awareness

Self-awareness means listening to your inner voice, taking on the stories you’ve convinced yourself are holding you back. These are filters which we walk around with which weigh us down. Step out of the office, grab a coffee or simply walk away when you recognize the cues that whisper ‘No way‘.

3. What are you passionate about?

If you’re not sure, here’s a little tidbit you should know. Most people admit to suffering a physical handicap from doing something that they love! I used to get writers cramp years back before computers became mainstream. Writing was my escape hatch. Many have shared that they suffer sleepless nights and lack of appetite because they’ve absorbed themselves in their “hobby” for hours on end.

Every entrepreneur I have interviewed has shared that their successful career all started out as a hobby; a What-If.

You don’t have to quit your day job to pursue a career doing what you love. You make time for it slowly during your down time and I promise it will grow from there taking on a life of its own.

4. Start bragging about it.

Now that you’re clear on what profession will truly make you happy, you need to start talking about it. Speak to friends, family and colleagues. You will inspire people by your passion and guess what? They in turn will connect you with opportunities you used to only imagine which leads me to our last and most essential footprint.

5. Ask and Imagine.

If your dream career is one where you are collecting rocks as they fall out of the sky, then grab a hard hat and start taking mental pictures of that scene over and over in your mind. There’s some truth behind vision boards and other methods which create the scenes which we want in our life. It’s not hocus pocus. Successful people have shared that envisioning their life as they want it, has led to where they are today in their career.  So, keep your eye on the end game and it will unfold for you – your job is to sit back, relax and start envisioning.
